The following is the press release from Sheriff Goodnough regarding an incident that occurred on campus on October 25, 2024, at approximately 1:00 pm. I would like to add that the subject in question did not have a weapon on his person or in his vehicle.

The school district’s Emergency Operations Plan (EOP) outlines how to respond to emergencies and protect students, staff, and visitors. The plan was developed with input from emergency management, law enforcement, and other community partners.

As soon as Sergeant Miller was notified of the situation, the decision was made to put the campus on lockdown. This decision was consistent with the EOP.

In any situation that arises on campus, our primary focus is to ensure the immediate safety and security of everyone involved. This often means gathering critical information, consulting with local authorities, and ensuring that we have a full understanding of the facts before we communicate with our school community.

While we understand that timely updates are essential, it is also crucial that we provide accurate and clear information.
Once we had all the necessary details and were assured that the situation was under control, we communicated with staff, students, and the community as quickly as possible.

We acknowledge that the delay in notification may have caused concern, and we are reviewing our procedures to ensure we can improve our response time while still upholding the safety and accuracy of our communications.

Thank you for your understanding.
Steve McNew, Superintendent

Press Release from Sheriff Goodnough - October 25, 2024
ISD Disturbance / Home Invasion Investigation
Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough is reporting an incident which occurred at the Monroe County Intermediate School District at 1101 S. Raisinville Road in Monroe Township.

While assigned to the ISD, Sergeant Jason Miller was alerted by staff about a male subject that was outside of the building acting erratic. Sergeant Miller was able to locate the male subject who was identified as an employee of the ISD in a rear parking lot and engaged in conversation. While speaking with the subject, he made movements and gestures to lead Sgt. Miller to think he may have been armed.

Sergeant Miller alerted Monroe County Central Dispatch as to the situation at which time multiple units from across the county converged on the area. The suspect then began to walk southbound from the school and ultimately off school grounds with Sergeant Miller following. Once off school grounds, the male entered an occupied, unlocked residence in the 1100 block of S. Raisinville Road. Inside the residence were two female victims and a male victim.
Once inside the residence, the male subject barricaded himself in a bedroom with one of the female victims. Deputies surrounded the residence and made entry into the home; at which time they began negotiations with the male suspect. Deputies forced entry into the bedroom ultimately rescuing the hostage and taking the suspect into custody.

The offender was taken into custody for Home Invasion, without further incident. The offender’s identity is being withheld pending formal charges.

The Sheriff would like to commend the members working in Central Dispatch for coordinating responding personnel in an efficient and calm manner.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by members of the Michigan State Police, Ida Township Fire Department and Monroe Community Ambulance.

A female victim was transported to Promedica Monroe Regional with minor injuries.

The case remains under investigation by the Monroe County Detective Bureau, anyone with information is asked to contact 734-240-7530.
