Hearing Impairment
Program for Children with Hearing Impairments (HI)
Monroe County Intermediate School District (MCISD) provides support to Deaf and Hard of Hearing (D/HH) students throughout Monroe County.
Who Do We Serve?
Services for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing are defined by state law (Revised Administrative Rules) to include students with any degree of hearing loss that adversely affects educational performance. To qualify for HI services, or to be recertified, the following are required by state law:
1. A recent (less than one-year-old) report from an ear-nose-throat (ENT) doctor;
2. A recent report from an audiologist;
3. Assessment by local district or MCISD staff verifying educational impact.
The MCISD program for Deaf and Hard of Hearing serves residents of the nine school districts in Monroe County: Airport, Bedford, Dundee, Ida, Jefferson, Mason Consolidated, Monroe, Summerfield and Whiteford.
How do we serve?
Teacher Consultant (TC) Services consist of direct and consultative services (an IEP decision) to the student and the student’s team. The MCISD TC will develop a plan of support with the help of the local district classroom teacher and/or case manager; providing support for a variety of needs to assist the student in accessing the curriculum, per the IEP decision. The MCISD TC works with the general education team to assess, review, and implement support services based on ongoing data on student growth. The MCISD TC also provides any needed professional development in the areas of deaf learning and culture to the local district team. As determined by the IEP, a Speech and Language Pathologist may provide services directly to the student and/or as a consult to the team. Students attending their neighborhood schools receive services of a teacher-consultant for the deaf and hard of hearing as well as audiologic and equipment support. Other support services may be provided by the resident district. Students attending other specialized programs who have hearing impairment as a secondary disability may also receive teacher-consultant, audiology and equipment support.
